Shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night, state police troopers from Kingston were dispatched to Oliveria Road in Shandaken, just west of Woodstock, where there was a report of a one-vehicle crash in the area.

An investigation into the crash determined that a 2018 Maserati, which was being driven by Hauppauge resident John Martinez, 39, had left the roadway and struck a large tree before overturning and coming to a rest on its roof.

Martinez and his passenger, Huntington Station resident Michael Colangelo, 31, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant, a 28-year man who from Wantagh who was sitting in the backseat, was transported to Albany Medical Center with injuries that are believed to be non-life threatening.

Colangelo, a 10-year veteran, was a canine officer who was married earlier in the day and who had his wedding reception at a nearby resort just before the crash. They were reportedly planning to honeymoon in Costa Rica following the wedding.

Speed was a factor in the crash, said State Police Maj. Pierce Gallagher, who noted he believed the officers were not wearing seat belts and the backseat passenger was wearing one.

“We’re headed to beautiful Costa Rica,” the couple posted on HoneyFund.com. “Half our trip will be spent exploring the gorgeous rainforests while the other half will be spent soaking up the sun and enjoying the beach.”

On Twitter, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stated “our entire city is keeping the families and loved ones of Officer John Martinez and Officer Michael Colangelo in our prayers.”
